Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)

Dr. Emil Vodder created Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) in the 1930s and the benefits of MLD are increasingly well accepted worldwide in a wide range of applications:

The waste produced by processes that happen between blood capillaries and cells have to be removed by the Lymphatic System. It sometimes needs help - especially when challenged by infection or trauma (physical or emotional). MLD may provide that help.

By applying a range of specialised, rhythmic and extremely gentle pumping techniques directly to the skin movement of lymphatic fluid is stimulated. Increased flow can help the body deal with infections and damage more efficiently and effectively. The movements may calm the nervous system and help inhibit the passage of pain.

MLD – general applications

Abdomen - constipation, IBS, stressed tummy, PMT, ovulation or period pain, vascular/ lymphatic return from legs

In conditions where tissues are congested (puffy, watery or hard), painful, bruised or scarred MLD is light enough not to cause further damage.

The rhymical application of the hands can result in deep relaxation, especially as pain is never caused - indeed the constantly changing pressures with every single hand movement may interrupt pain signals.

MLD – facial

Intensive work on the face - pre/ post surgery, headaches, migraines, tired eyes, sinus, tinnitus, dental, skin complaints

By encouraging the removal of toxins and excess, stagnant, connective tissue fluid the skin gets its nutrients more quickly and begins to look fantastic.

Typically you can expect skin to look clearer and feel softer, eyes to be brighter, dark areas below the eyes to lighten, puffiness and congestion to reduce and a more defined jaw-line.

Head, eye, ear, nose, mouth, dental, throat, sinus and skin problems resulting from lymphatic related congestion can respond positively.

MLD - lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is the name given to swelling caused if part of the lymphatic system is removed, damaged or missing. Typically people report sensations of tightness, bursting, heaviness and/ or deep aching in the affected area. It is seen mostly in the arms and legs but can affect breasts, genitals, head or trunk.

Primary Lymphoedema can be inherited or happen at any age without any family history and no obvious cause.

Secondary Lymphoedema can develop after lymph node removal or if the lymphatics are damaged by trauma, injury, infection, surgery or radiotherapy.

Venous problems can also lead to lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema treatment is highly specialised and follows 4 stages from internationally agreed protocols:

  1. MLD - a range of movements is applied to the skin by hand in a way that stimulates the lymphatic system and the movement of lymph away from the swollen area to a healthy part of the body that can drain the fluid.
  2. Compression Bandaging or Garments - after MLD it is necessary for the treated area to be bandaged or for compression garments to be worn.
  3. Movement - it is necessary to use the affected area appropriately.
  4. Skin Care - specific products are advised, also how to avoid infections or circumstances that may cause damage to the affected area.

Related conditions

Any area of damage following injury, infection or surgery can have an element of localised oedema (swelling). Prompt treatment may avoid the situation worsening.

Conditions including Lipoedema, Venous Insufficiency, Cyclic Idiopathic Syndrome (pre menstrual bloating and/or weight gain), Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (Sudeck's disease) can all have an element of oedema and may be helped by MLD.

“Already receiving MLD treatment from Deborah for post-menopausal symptoms upon diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome my doctor suggested MLD might be a relevant for this too. I am very pleased with the outcome and think that with MLD every 2 months I am able to experience almost total relief from the unpleasant symptoms.”
Jean Brown, Ludlow

“Following a serious head and neck operation I was feeling and looking far from normal. I was told that I could expect the lymphoedema to take many months to subside. A friend had heard that Deborah Berry gave lymphatic drainage treatment and my consultant said he was happy for me to have it.

The results of the treatment were apparent even after the first of three sessions and the way she worked involved no discomfort whatsoever. My neck soon started to look and feel more normal again and the massage technique she used on the scar tissue was also making it look and feel better. My consultant was surprised at my progress and was very interested to hear about the treatment.

Many thanks Deborah.”

“7 years ago I was diagnosed with primary lymphoedema. I have been going to Deborah for 5½ years. She is so professional and caring and it has made my life a lot better knowing there is someone at the end of the phone if I have problems with my leg. I am very happy.”
Les Powell, Hereford

“I found Deborah six years ago. I had received treatment from someone in Switzerland with different training for MLD, and was rather suspicious, as I did not want anyone to wreck the help I had had. Deborah was entirely accepting of this, but soon showed me how much she could do for me.

Since then I have had regular sessions with Deborah. One year I tried to give up the treatments, and when I returned she was not in any way judgemental, simply listened to my point of view, then firmly gave me hers. She is extremely thoughtful and precise, and always offers me valuable information when asked for it.

My life has been transformed through regular MLD treatment. Instead of being someone who finds walking difficult I can hike all day long and run after my grand children. Deborah's ethical approach to health has been of huge help to me and I will be grateful to her for the remainder of my life.”
